Echocardiography
An echocardiogram, often called an echo, is a non-invasive ultrasound examination of the heart. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create moving images that help assess the heart’s chambers, valves, muscle movement, pumping function and blood flow.
Your doctor may refer you for an echocardiogram if they are investigating symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, checking a suspected problem with the heart’s valves or chambers, or monitoring an existing heart condition. A standard echocardiogram assesses the structure and function of the heart but does not directly examine the coronary arteries.
