CT Scan

CT scan or CAT scan is short for Computerised Tomography; it uses low dose radiation to produce high resolution cross-section images of the body. It is used to diagnose and monitor a wide variety of medical conditions. To highlight the blood vessels and blood supply on the images, an intravenous injection of the contrast media is sometimes required as part of your examination. Outside of that, CT scans are fast and painless.

Please make sure you bring your referral letter and Medicare card (if you have one). The more information you can bring to the appointment, the better, so try and collate any other previous medical images or reports that relate to your current condition.

Ahead of your appointment, please let us know if you have ever had any reaction to a contrast injection or other medication or if you have any renal conditions. Please also let us know if you are or think you might be pregnant. You’ll need to complete a questionnaire before your CT Scan if a contrast injection is required or if you are having an interventional procedure under CT guidance.

Depending on the area, you may be required to fast or drink a certain amount of fluids ahead of your procedure. At the time of booking your appointment, we will explain what preparation and instructions are required. You can call the practice at any time if you have any questions about your examination or the preparation required.

You will need to change into a patient gown for your scan because clothes fastenings can show up on the scan and obscure the images. You’ll also need to take off any jewellery.

Once you’re ready, the radiographer will ask you to lie on the scanning table, which moves through the CT scanner. You may need to hold your breath for a short time whilst the images are taken to ensure the highest quality images.

A CT scan itself usually takes only a few minutes however you may be on the CT scanner table for 5-20 minutes depending on the examination. In some cases, you may also be required to arrive up to an hour prior to the appointment to undertake specific preparation. We will inform you of this at the time of your booking.

The images are provided to our Specialist Radiologist who will report on the findings. You will need to see your referring doctor following the scan, who will receive the images and the results from our radiologist usually on the day on the examination or on the following working day.
